Do engaging 6 minute cartoons that teach 8th Grade Science Standards, with quizzes and activities to support the curriculum sound too good to good to be true? Well, IT IS TRUE...IT IS Brain POP! Animated characters engage students while supporting California's 8th Grade Science Standards.
My students are typical 8th graders, who enjoy asking questions, figuring things out and learning about new things.
They absolutely love going to the computer lab for web activities and are very technologically literate. Though they come from a wide range of economic and ethnic backgrounds, ALL ARE THOROUGHLY ENGAGED by video and multimedia activities with which they can interact, either individually or in teams. ENTER Brain POP,an invaluable tool I use to engage students. Whether introducing a new concept or reviewing, Brain POP holds their interest as they interactively participate with the video short and the activities that support every science standard I teach! We watch a video short, then answer a series of questions on the concept. We compete to see who gets the most questions right! We often complete other associated activities. Brain POP sparks topical discussions engaging my students in an incredibly effective way.
My Project
Brain POP is an interactive multimedia technology, delivered on demand to school or home computers. A variety of subscriptions can be purchased for various uses. My students and I have been fortunate to have had access to Brain POP for the last several years, in our classroom and in our computer lab. Whether in the computer lab for individual assignments, or in my classroom for introduction/review, Brain POP has greatly increased the engagement and learning of ALL of my students (GATE, struggling learners, regular education and intervention). Aligned with the California State Standards for Science, studies have shown the use of Brain POP to increase student scores on end of the year tests! But even more important, my students look forward to Brain POP and the associated activities. They often go on to explore the site on their own as they notice topics that interest them, even when this is not required. That is truly amazing!
No matter how wonderful Brain POP is, it is considered an "extra" by my district.
With current budget constraints the only way my students will have access to this wonderful learning tool is through alternate funding. With Brain POP students are engaged, interested and interacting with the curriculum, which is key to greater learning. Utilizing Brain POP really helps my students learn the standards in a fun and engaging way!
