Give Leverage to First Grade Engineers: Part 2

My students need 3 Simple Machines sets to learn about simple machines to jump start their education of effective engineering.

My Students

I teach in a middle-class neighborhood where we serve immigrant and refugee families alongside native-speakers. This creates an environment that is rich in parent support and diversity and asks teachers to get creative with an attainable and inspirational curriculum.

Recently a mom told me that her daughter has fallen in love with science in my class!

This is why we do this, to show children what the world has to offer and what talents they have to offer the world!

My Project

My first-graders love to build! We use books, paper, popsicle sticks, and even food to build with, but we need sustainable materials that can support all students at once.

The LEGO Simple Machines Sets will allow my students to investigate levers, pulleys, and axles as they build solutions to proposed problems.

They will work as engineers do: researching, brainstorming, building, and evaluating their designs. We have already received funding for some of these LEGO sets, but we need more so that the whole class can participate in these building projects! These sets will provide enough materials for my students to work in teams as they explore the fundamentals of engineering. These lessons will be taught in rotations to four first-grade classes, reaching 100 students each year!
