Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
One of the main indicators of whether or not children will learn to read is if they can learn sight words. These are the same words that appear over and over again and that children can not sound out.
When children are able to read sight words, they gain an enormous sense of confidence. They begin to really feel like they can read, and they are will to take more risks as readers.
My first grade students are supposed to read at least 100 sight words by the end of the year. Many of my East Oakland students are English Language Learners, struggling to understand the language. They all receive free or reduced lunches and their reading skills are far below their suburban counterparts.
In an effort to catch my students up, we decided as a class that students would read 200 words by the end of the year. The most effective way for us to meet our goal would be for students to actually have the words they need on flashcards and in different fun center activities they could practice each day.
The sight word kits could be taken home and used in school to supplement learning, and students will feel an enormous sense of pride and accomplishment as they began to really see that they could read the words. Please help us make reading a reality for my first grade students, and for students in East Oakland for years to come.
