My students need books that will be interesting to read, but that are at a lower reading level that they can comprehend. These "hi/lo" books will be perfect for my students that struggle with reading.
I started teaching at a new school this year and was a little apprehensive about what my students would be like. I'd been told by other teachers that they were a "tough group." As a teacher, I'm always determined to not let others' opinions about a student color my view. I want to get to know each child for him or her self and form my own impressions. However, I was prepared to have some "tough" kids in my class.
I was so excited to meet my students and find that, while they may have some learning challenges, they're great kids!
Some love to draw, others are into sports, and three are members of the school band. While many of my students come from families who struggle financially, the majority of them enjoy school and are eager to learn. Two are English Learners and five have learning disabilities. And, in the week that we've been together, I already love them!
My Project
Many of my 5th grade students struggle with reading. These kids have a hard time finding books that are interesting to them, but are still at a reading level that they can comprehend. And, they don't want their peers to see them reading "baby books". When researching options for them, I found the Red Rhino chapter books published by High Noon Books. These are perfect for my kids!
These books have high interest topics, but low readability levels so students can understand what they're reading and stay with the story.
I'm excited to add these books to my classroom library and give my struggling readers the options that they need.
