I teach EVERYTHING to my 7th graders...math, literacy, social skills, you name it! We have a wonderful working relationship. We have a mutual respect that makes teaching them easy. They devour every piece of information I am willing to give and make it a useful piece of their lives.
HELP! I am trying to introduce the idea of Historical Fiction to a group of 7th graders. They aren't that thrilled about history and reading is by far their favorite subject. However Jip has a fascinating story that includes mystery, action and drama that is sure to peak their interest. The only problem is....I have only have one personal copy, no copies in the local libraries, and 24 needy students.
One of the best ways to support struggling readers is through reading aloud. I want to expose the students to the genre of historical fiction and show them it doesn't have to be drab. They need to experience the book with me through whole class readings. I have taught in other schools where students in 5th grade were totally connected to the book and wanted more so I am sure my 7th graders will take to the book as well.
Your help will give a life-long gift that no one can ever take away....good literature. A good story stays with us, we pass it on, we retell it, we learn from it. You will give my students an unforgettable experience. Reading the right book can inspire, connect, and provoke critical thinking that will carry my students beyond my four walls.
