My students are everything you love and roll your eyes at about a middle schooler. One sauntered into my classroom once, casually holding hands with a robot she'd built in her spare time, asking me to read a Superman fan-fiction story she'd just written. Another whose got the sass of a thousand Marla Gibbs', and would tell you she'd rather do anything than sit in a classroom create one of the most profound projects in an assignment about cultural imagery I've seen in all my classes.
They're perceptive, challenging, cool, smart, weird, innovative and emotional.
All of the things that're going to make them excellent artists. Beyond that, they're unique in that they're all students of North Carolinas only all girl public charter system. Our girls come to us from all parts of the county; from its underserved to it's affluent communities.
My Project
My goal is to be able to outfit all of my students with the tools necessary to encourage their ongoing creative endeavors. I teach approximately 200 girls, and last year that was a sizeable hurdle. Like most teachers, I've tried to resuscitate my program out of pocket, and even sought help from the community. Even with that, by the end of the school year, we were having to be exceptionally creative with pencil, dried markers and copy paper.
Everybody's an artist until they stop being one.
I want my students to continue following their artistic pursuits inside and outside of the classroom. For the students who've already found their passion in it, having more (and better) supplies will help them further explore their talents. For students still dipping their toes in the art waters, my hope is that by giving them better tools they'll invest in themselves and start to recognize the potential in their work and be encouraged to make more art.
