Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students don't need supplies. They need to know that they matter to this world. It's the act of giving that will really make the difference in the lives of my students. They need to see that other people are willing to invest in their potential to be great. Maybe then, they will begin to see it for themselves.
I teach Algebra and Geometry (9th and 10th grade) at a Title I school. My fellow teachers and I struggle daily against the challenges that our students face that are outside of our classroom and out of our control. We try to instill in our students the ability to set and work towards long-term goals. However, many of our students accomplish more than we know if they just make it to school from day to day. The future is more of a distant dream for them versus something to work towards. This is the ever-increasing challenge of working with students of low-socioeconomic status. How can we get these students to be invested in their education and truly understand its benefit for their lives? One way I feel we can encourage our students in this way is to show them that there are other people in the world that are invested in them.
Math is a challenging subject. It requires more effort than most other courses. As a result, many students feel defeated before they even begin. However, graphing calculators give them a sense of empowerment and confidence that is not otherwise present when they are working math problems. If we can equip them with a tool that gives them the courage to face such a crucial subject in our world today, I feel that they will finally get to taste victory over their mental block against math. My high school has a couple of class sets, but we don’t have enough to fully equip every student with a calculator. It is my hope to eventually receive an additional classroom set of calculators so that each student can routinely feel as though they can approach the problems before them with confidence. It is this confidence that calculators so often bring to students that I feel my students lack. In addition, our students desperately need to have the experience of working with technology so that they can be a better asset for our technologically-advancing world. This exposure to technology will also prepare them for the equipment they would be expected to use in college.
Your contribution to my students will do more than just provide them with calculators. Funding this project will show my students that their education matters to you, and they need to know that they matter.
