My students need a variety of craft materials for binding their writing publications as well as materials that support oral language development and oral storytelling.

I teach first grade at a Title I school to a majority ELL (English Language Learner) population. My school has a strong tradition for teaching a workshop model in writing, however, we need the resources to help our students rehearse their ideas orally and to publish the students' work like real books.

At the end of each unit, my students each publish two finished pieces, one in English and one in Spanish. They are doing double the work of their monolingual peers and as their teacher I need more supplies than my colleagues. My school does not provide supplemental instructional materials for intervention, or materials that enhance oral language development. We are also in need of the finishing touches such as card stock or colored masking tape for binding durable and eye-catching books.

With these materials, my students will have an opportunity to use their oral language to tell and rehearse various types of writing and to feel proud of their published pieces. The play-doh crafting tools can be used to help children practice oral language through play and can also help students rehearse their procedural writing (how-to's) by acting out the steps. The magnetic letters and pocket charts are used for small group instruction with my intervention group in word study. These materials can help the most struggling readers and writers practice constructing words using the order of sounds. The blue colored pencils are used for editing and revising the writing pieces they have chosen for publication. The colored card stock and craft tape is used to bind their final publications so that their books are durable enough to share with classmates and family.
