Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Ninety-eight percent of my students live below the poverty line. Their families all work hard to provide for them, but many still struggle to cover basic needs such as housing, food, and clothing. Students frequently come to school hungry and tired due to limited resources in the home. They may lack breakfast or a bed to sleep on. Many basic school supplies such as folders or gym shoes are not in the budget for our families.
It's hard to focus on learning when your emotional and physical needs are not always met.
Many students feel hopeless about their ability to succeed in school. My students are eager to learn but frequently doubt their abilities. Many of these kids are learning English as a second or even as a third language. Please consider supporting these great kids to reach their full potential and believe in themselves.
My Project
Students in our school often enroll with very little prior education or are very far behind due to life circumstances, including learning English as a second language. Becoming a strong reader is not always the top priority, nor is it something that my students think they can do. With the ever-present lure of video games, encouraging kids to dive into reading can be a daunting task.
Graphic novels bring the excitement of color and action to the imaginative world of reading most of us know and love.
By partnering with my class in this project, you will be instilling the love of reading into these 6th grade students. You will also be the team in the background, rooting for them to succeed in a skill that they will need throughout their lives.
Independent reading time is a daily activity in our school. Students are invited to choose a book they are interested in and expected to read on their own while I work with small groups on skills. Your investment ensures that my students are engaged and on task during this time.
