Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I have a self-contained classroom consisting of 10 students, 3 in kindergarten and 6 in first grade. I teach in a Title I school and the parents of my students are economically disadvantaged.
All students qualify for instructional services in a program for students with severe intellectual disabilities and developmental delay.
The range of disabilities include autism spectrum disorder, intellectual disability, developmental delay, cerebral palsy, and Down syndrome.
Eight of my students are nonverbal, which makes communication a central challenge for all curricular and non-curricular activities.
My Project
A Smart board in the classroom will be the main communication vehicle with the students. It will meet the students needs to provide the answer to a question by selecting a choice on the Smart board and placing in it in the corresponding place. The students receptive communication skills are almost at age-level. Therefore, the use of technology will increase their level of participation with interactive opportunities to actively participate wit nonverbal options. Additionally the technology embedded in the Smart board meets the students' needs corresponding to poor fine motor skills resulting from their disabilities.
Given that all students in my classroom have an IEP (Individualized Educational Program) in which support such as the use of visuals, manipulatives, larger font, contrasting colors, among others, the Smart board will be the perfect tool to meet those needs.
All of my students are also ELL's (English Language Learners) who need additional language support in both English and Spanish. This technology will allow me access to existing interactive materials that promote development in all content areas and in daily functional skills.
Please consider helping these particularly vulnerable students in great need. Their parents and I appreciate your generosity in advance.
My project intends to use technology to give a voice to highly motivated students who need alternative ways of communication.
