Our classroom is made up of the most "individual" individuals in the school. In fact, we celebrate by having our class motto as "free to be me"! We are a self-contained Communication Disorder Classroom...in short, the "autism" classroom. This classroom has only be open for 4 semesters and is still building inventory, resources, and especially relationships. The majority of our students struggle financially or are from single-parent homes. We are definitely a family and help to meet all their needs without question.
My Project
The indoor swing/cocoon, sensory tools, social skills items, and sign language references will provide the gross motor and vestibular stimulation necessary to prepare my students to sit quietly and listen, complete independent work, and regulate their sensory needs. The additional materials will not directly teach my students new skills, but they will help prime my students for learning how to manage many daily living skills. For example, while I'm teaching a lesson on number naming, one of my students may be rolling around on the floor having difficulty maintaining their space and needing gross motor activity. If the swing or cocoon is installed in the classroom, I can have my aide work with that student on swinging while I continue teaching. The swinging will activate their vestibular system and ready that student for learning and promote self-regulation. Finally, the sign language reference cards will help to promote communication for my students by enhancing the para-professionals and teacher's knowledge of sign language.
The donations for this project will improve my classroom by reducing the amount of behavioral, sensory, and communication issues, because I will be able to provide the appropriate stimulation that my students need, but cannot voice, due to their disabilities.
With less behavioral issues, we can increase our learning and time on task. I'm looking forward to seeing my students happier and ready to learn.
