My students need an iPad to enhance our learning experience. The iPad offers countless online applications, but also couples perfectly with the Osmo gaming system.
Technology has been demonstrated in numerous studies to be a powerful tool to help children learn. Unfortunately, our access to current technology tools is virtually none. Having even just ONE iPad would go a long way to bringing more technology into the classroom.
My classroom is a wonderfully diverse group of young learners.
They come to school every day curious about what we are going to do that day. They represent a wide range of skills, multiple languages, and family backgrounds. Some students are reading at 1st and 2nd grade levels, while others struggle to name the letters in the alphabet.
One thing for sure is that they all LOVE using the computer. We have two old desktop computers. Every morning, I hear the questions: "Who's turn is it for listening to reading? Can I do the computer today? Are we going to the computer lab today?" Adding an iPad to our room will be an exciting new tool for daily instruction and independent center time.
My Project
Young students have already grasped the love of using computers for games. Why not use that love of technology to develop their problem solving and creative thinking skills?
Adding the use of an iPad opens the doors to an exciting time in classroom technology. More and more students come to school with an expectation of using a computer at some point in the day. I plan to use traditional educational applications (such as Raz-Kids) along with the new Osmo gaming system. An iPad is a key component for this system. These two couple perfectly together to create a virtual learning experience where students can use engaging manipulatives to enhance and extend their learning. Along with the game system, it also allows for more ownership in their learning and the ability to self-correct. They will be able to use the iPad for reading, phonics skills, math, science and social studies research among other activities.
From Kindergarten on up, the lives of students will be flooded with technology.
I want to capitalize on their excitement for learning and technology and show them how to be learners for life. An iPad will guide them in building their creative thinking, research, problem solving, and collaboration skills. They will be able to use it independently, in pairs, and small groups to build self-confidence through hands-on games.
