This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
My students are bright children who have yet to unlock their full academic potential in their current school placements. My students come from challenging backgrounds and often do not possess the basic requirements to excel in the classroom. School funding inequities have long been a topic of concern. Schools serving low-income areas often see receive fewer resources. My student's are hard working and determined to succeed. Providing them with basic materials such as books with characters of color helps to promote diversity and to create positive role models.
At home, my students and their families communicate in the language they know best, Spanish.
However, my students and their families have a desire for better educational opportunities and to master the English language.
My Project
Students who struggle with reading at an early age often feel discouraged and frustrated. The feelings they encounter will affect their motivation to be successful, peer relationships, and their self-esteem. The challenge becomes finding a "just right" book that will appeal to the struggling reader. I believe the books I am requesting will help build vital language skills, enhance social skills and allow my student's to accumulate a variety of knowledge. The ability to read is part of the basic foundation for success in virtually every facet of life.
