This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
We are one big, happy family. Our Title I school is home to a large population (92%) of English language learners. My students face many challenges while living in a new country and attempting to learn a new language.
My three classes are filled with 75 eager students who love working together to complete various tasks.
My goal is to make their transition as smooth as possible in hopes of preparing them for great achievement. They are capable of greatness and will achieve.
My Project
Everyone can fall in love with coding! If current statistics provide any indication, the idea of black and brown girls in STEM seems far-fetched. Look at any data report out there, and you’ll find that women remain underrepresented in science, technology, engineering, and math. The inclusion of girls and people of color in STEM has to change. If the problem starts in childhood, that’s where we start the process. Parents and educators can usher young women (especially black and brown girls) into STEM careers with lifestyle-driven educational programs that ignite creativity, critical thinking, collaboration, and communication.
I am eager and excited to assist the Girls Who Code afterschool club with creating a makerspace lab where they will be able to make and create beyond their wildest dreams.
After attending the Pathfinders Summer Institute hosted by Infosys Foundation USA I am pumped to share the information learned. Teachers were encouraged to integrate coding, programming, and makerspace materials and creativity into their lessons to allow students to connect real-world experiences to what the are learning.
To get started with coding we will start with the Microbits. It can be coded from any web browser in Blocks, Javascript, Python, Scratch and more; no software required. Microbits are a fun, friendly and new way to engage with coding. In addition to the coding kits, my girls need an iPod to jam while we create, Logitectech digital crayons to use with our iPods, a pencil case, and mount stabilizers to record our making.
To recruit more girls we will conduct quarterly Girl STEM Nights, where girls and their families will enjoy coding, computer science, and makerspace activities.
