Girls Who Code Botleys

Help me give my students three Botley robots to help them improve their coding skills. I have found that girls in particular are very fond of the Botley robot!

My Students

School libraries help prepare students for college, career, and life. Our media center provides a multitude of books that reaches hundreds of students; I believe that school libraries should also provide access to high-end tools and resources for our students. This makes learning opportunities more equitable across schools.

As our school's media coordinator, I get to help hundreds of students fuel their passions through books, technology, and hands-on activities.

Our students are readers, makers, engineers, designers, artists, scientists, and inventors. Several years ago, I became a SciGirls leader. This helped me design more STEM activities with our girls in mind. Then three years ago, we had the unique opportunity to start an Imagination Chapter at our school. This program helps students develop their creative thinking and problem-solving skills. Since then, we have created a makerspace in our library which our students absolutely love.

We appreciate your help as we build a library for the future!

My Project

My female students love STEM; they like being creative and solving problems. However, a 2009 study found that only 5% of girls were interested in having an engineering career. Only 25% of science and technology jobs are filled by women. The coding activities we will do with these robots will encourage girls to enter STEM fields by helping them learn the foundation of coding.

Coding introduces girls (and boys) to problem solving, computational thinking, debugging, engineering, scientific methods, engineering, and more.

Botley Robots are for coding, not driving, and they do not require an iPad or computer to operate. These robots are sturdier than other ones that are intended for young children.

My students love hands-on activities and they love technology. Thank you for helping us add these robots!
