Help me give my students tuition to participate in the Girls on the Run program, which teaches girls valuable life skills and social awareness while at the same time training to run a 5k.
We are a Title I school in an inner-city area with 100% of the students receiving free/reduced-price lunch. Specifically, this project targets our 4th and 5th-grade girls who want to participate in Girls on the Run as an after-school activity. Our girls are fierce, tenacious, and capable of anything, but they need support. Many of our girls have never participated in a team sport before, especially running. Running can teach our girls to channel their energy for a positive impact on themselves, our school, and the greater community. Through this project, we will be able to fund a full team to participate in this award-winning athletic program.
My Project
This project will fund 6 girls to participate in the Girls on the Run program. This is a 10-week extra-curricular running program that teaches girls a number of valuable life skills such as self-awareness, self-empowerment, healthy habits, peer pressure, how to be a good friend, how to handle bullies, and how to recognize and harness one's inner strength. At the same time, the girls are training as a team to compete in a local 5k. They will compete against other Girls on the Run teams in our area and experience what it feels like to finish a race. After the great accomplishment of running a 5k, the program culminates with the team collaborating on the development and execution of a community service project.
I have seen this program completely change young girls for the better, affecting them academically, socially, and independently.
Working together as a team, these young girls support each other in learning about running and themselves. A past participant sums it up best when she says "Girls on the Run changed me by helping me succeed in school and life". Furthermore, many past participants have gone on to compete on secondary level running teams because of their experience with this program. We need to be able to support these young ladies in their mental, physical and social well-being in ways that they can access beyond the classroom. Girls on the Run is the perfect tool to do this!
