I sponsor an after-school Science and Math club for 6-8th grade girls in my middle school. Club members bring a range of backgrounds and academic strengths and weaknesses. Girls choose to stay for club activities each week. I organize and offer labs, building challenges, art projects, and professional role models for my students.
The club introduces girls to skills, content, or experiences they might not otherwise experience in our small rural area.
We have explored entomology, neuroscience, and various types of engineering.
My Project
We are going to put the "A" in STEAM! Students learn soldering by creating their own stained glass projects. Girls will be engaged in creating their project with their new found soldering skills!
Girls will then hone soldering skills with their very own Christmas tree project.
The tree kits allow girls to solder the components needed to play songs and light flashing LED's on the trees. The tools and foundational skills acquired with this project will enable the club to explore "making" using their soldering abilities. I anticipate future circuitry projects for girls to apply circuitry knowledge and soldering skills.
