Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My school is an exciting place to learn and work as a community. As a musical theatre teacher and basketball coach in a PreK-8 school, I have the unique opportunity to see a wide-range of students and watch them grow throughout the years.
Most of my students come from very low economic family status.
Many of these children face poverty and violence on a daily basis that is well beyond what most of us could imagine. Yet, the students do their best to learn. We try our best to give our students a good education, but with limited resources, there are many things that others consider basic parts of education that we cannot provide without assistance. My school is very limited in the funds that teachers receive every year. Teachers go forward and buy their own supplies to help their students have a successful school year.
My Project
This past year our girls' basketball team practiced with 2 balls that my mom donated to the school.
Many of these girls are playing for the first time and have to practice dribbling and shooting.
When 10-15 girls are sharing 2 balls, dribbling drills take a long time, which is a luxury we don't have. We can only practice 1 hour a day, 3 days a week because our school rents out the gym to the after school and rec league programs. Therefore, we have to maximize our practice time.
The easiest way to do this is to have a basketball for each girl. This way they can all do dribbling drills at the same time instead of always rotating through. We have 6 baskets, so they can have two balls at each basket for shooting drills, instead of only using two baskets since we only have two balls.
These girls love the game and want to work. We can't let lack of equipment slow us down for another season.
