Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My after school students are all girls and they are excited to engage in technology. They stay after school to learn more about technology topics. They have worked together to learn how to program robots that we borrowed. They have become very creative and have used technology to create awesome presentations. The girls in this club are very unique because they have friends that do not understand why they love technology. However, they respond to their friends that their club is really fun and that they should join. They never get discouraged with negative comments and continue to enjoy technology.

Girls in technology are underrepresented and this club is giving them the opportunity to encourage them to be part of the STEM field.

Our school, like many Chicago Public Schools, does not always have the extra funds to buy extra technology. Most of my students are Hispanic, 68%, and 3% African American. If my girls do not engage with technology at such an early age, they will continue to be underrepresented. They need opportunities to access programs that will help them see themselves in STEM fields.

My Project

In the after school club, the girls have been learning about different technology tools. With the 3D printer, will be utilized as a great instructional technology tool. The girls are going to have the opportunity to use 3D modeling to create 3D designs and then use the 3D printer to print their models. The girls will use their mathematical skills to represent an object in 3D by learning to draw using the X-axis, y-axis, and the z-axis. They will learn how to apply their mathematical knowledge to design simple shapes and then create more sophisticated designs. The use of the 3D printer will help the girls better understand the connection of 3D designing to something concrete. The girls will also learn more about the use of 3D printers and how they are being used in fields in science, engineering, and other fields.

The girls will then, help their classmates design and use the 3D printers in our technology class.

They will pass their knowledge and skill to other students that are not part of the club.
