Our school is in a health and nutrition school in a city district of New York. The school serves grades pre-kindergarten through three. We are a tight-knit school where the students love to be in school. The students need fun and engaging activities to foster their love of learning at a young age.
Many of them may not have access to these experiences at home, so I want to provide that for them in the classroom.
Many of my students come from immigrant homes where English is not the first language. This has not hindered their enthusiasm and curiosities. They have questions and ideas but are always in need of resources for inspiration and reference.
My Project
Overheard in the school "Boys are good at computers." This stereotype needs to be broken! Girls need to see themselves as coders! I was saddened to hear this conversation between two girls in my school. Another teacher mentioned "Ms. Esther is great at computers and she's a girl!" I want to be able to empower the girls in my school by exposing them to computers, coding and robotics!
Computer science and technology need more females in the field and I want my students to see that it isn't just for boys!
We had another Donors Choose project funded with coding books and Lego Mindstorms. We recently started building robots! We are now requesting tablets to use to download the Lego Mindstorms app to program the robots we build!
