Girls Can Code in Kindergarten

My Students

I teach kindergarten in a Title I, northern California elementary school where about 50% of our student population qualify to receive free or reduced-price lunch and breakfast. This past school year, I had several second language learners, two identified special needs children, some students who had gone to TK or Preschool, and some who were starting their first year in formal education.

My students are taught to believe in being creative as they learn to read, explore numbers, and problem solve in both math and science in small collaborative, differentiated groupings with an emphasis on personalized learning as part of our daily workshops.

My Project

I am asking for an iPad with a strong case for my Kindergarten girls to learn how to code and compete with the boys in the class. I have a class of 23 students with only 7 girls. I am finding that these girls think they need a boy to help them figure out how to code when we play go kart coding, drive our blue-bots through a maze or even when we code a pattern with colored paper!

I am hoping with this iPad my girls can work together as a team, build a skill set early in their educational careers and find their own strengths especially in our male dominated classroom and in a male dominated field.

Coding is an important skill not just for today but for their future. To get them interested in coding at a young age, opens the door to a future skill set they will need. Studies show there are a lack females interested in STEM careers and I am hoping to empower my young girls to believe in their own capabilities to explore their interests and develop their own individual capabilities in STEM fields.
