The students of our school are poor. Most of our students come home to empty houses due to the fact that their parents are working 1-2 jobs just to keep a roof over their kids' heads and food on the table. A vast majority of my student (90%) receive free and reduced-price lunch at school. For the most part, those free meals they get at school are the only meals that they will eat for that day.
Summer vacation for most of our students is not a vacation.
They spend this time working either alongside their parents in the fields or find their own jobs in order to help bring in extra money for the family.
Most of our students do not get to participate in sports because they cannot afford the required equipment.
Money at our school is very short, especially for sports. Being able to provide our students with the best equipment is always a struggle.
Our students love basketball. They love being out there competing and being with their teammates. Our problem is our girls' basketball team doesn't have enough money to buy game shoes.
This makes it difficult for us to get a lot of kids out for the team and those who do come out have to find decent shoes to wear.
During a team meeting, a few players asked our coaching staff if they could fundraise for new team shoes because the ones they have have no grip and some have holes in the bottom. Money is always an issue in our small community, especially in schools for items outside of the classroom. That is when one of our students suggested posting a project on DonorsChoose.org. Having this project funded would allow us to provide our players a sense of relief, by not worrying about how they will get shoes for practices and games. Please help us help them be successful student-athletes. Thank you!!!
