Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
106 years is the age of the building my students come to every day. Located on the west side of Chicago, our school serves pre-K - 8th grade. Our demographic is predominantly Latino with many students learning English as a second language. The entire school qualifies for free breakfast and lunch. There are many challenges that come along with being one of the largest public school systems in the country. Often, my students do not get the opportunity to participate in different sports activities due to financial issues, location or exposure. This lack of participation makes it nearly impossible for my students to join teams in High School. I would like to use this project to develop the skills students need to participate in sports later in life.
My Project
Even though I am a life long athlete, coaching is a different animal. My girls do not get very much exposure to formal sports teams and when they go to high school, it is hard for them to compete. I want them to be able to get into the game. Playing sports is a great way to build self-esteem, get physically fit and get away from the screens. Chicago Public Schools are historically underfunded. I am asking for volleyballs, basketballs, and pinnies. These items are all we need to get the program going and get in the game. Building self-esteem can literally change the lives of these young women. By providing the funding for volleyballs and basketballs, you can help keep my students in the gym and off the streets. Please help me get the tools I need to make a difference and get my girls in the game.
