This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
The students at my school are an energetic and hardworking group of children. They enjoy coming to school, but school funding cuts over the years have impacted what schools can provide to individual classrooms.
I teach second grade in an urban neighborhood where all the students at school are eligible for free breakfast and free lunch.
Some students live below the poverty line and their families struggle to provide them with basic necessities needed to be successful in school. Despite these obstacles, our school has hard-working students, as well as teachers and staff, who strive to make our school a welcoming and inviting place. In addition, our school is one of the top-performing schools in the city.
My Project
This project is for specific books that showcase women and girls who have made valuable contributions to society. The contributions are in varied fields, such as science, technology, politics, athletics, medicine, education, and the civil rights movement. It is critical for young children, both girls and boys, to see positive representations of women and girls in many different ways.
The books I am requesting would give students a much more diverse selection to choose from.
The books highlight women and girls of different backgrounds, different times, and different places. But they all have some similarities. They are fearless, independent, ambitious, and persistent individuals. These are the books that need to be in my students' hands. We do a great deal of reading in the classroom. Students read on a daily basis, either to themselves or with a partner. My students, especially my girls, would love to have books about such incredible role models.
