As a school counselor in an elementary school, I have the unique job of not only working with over three hundred students as a counselor but also teaching classroom guidance lessons to each class in grades kindergarten through six.
One thing I have seen more than ever before is an increase in girl drama and challenging peer relations.
Instead of teaching our young women what not to do, it's time to teach them how to feel empowered and unite together. It's time to help raise them to appreciate the best in themselves as well as in others.
My Project
Girls in elementary school are dealing with more peer relationship issues than ever. From lack of self-confidence to competing for attention of others, it's important to teach our young females how to believe in themselves and their unique abilities and gifts.
These books would be used in my female empowerment/Girl Power small groups as well as during guidance class to help promote, educate and encourage our students to embrace their unique qualities.
My goal is to have every child at our elementary school truly believe that they are important and worth more than what others may think. Using literature and stories is a way for students to connect to a lesson and see themselves represented in different characters.
