I teach 19 regular ed. first grade students in a rural Title 1 school. I have a wide range of abilities in my classroom, from 3rd grade reading level, to not reading at all yet. I have several Spanish-speaking students in my class as well. In preparing for the holidays to come this year, I found several gift sets that would be perfect for my students to make for their parents for either Christmas or Mother's Day. One of the projects that I want to work on with my students is for them to create a 2007 calendar for their families. The calendar is blank and the kids fill in the days/dates and draw a picture to go with that month. This will not only be a great gift, but it will also be a great calendar math activity that will help them understand our calendar, months of the year, days of the week, and seasons. The second gift idea is a set of papier-mâché pots that we get to decorate with all kinds of cute, sparkly stuff. Decorating the pots will be the culmination of the unit that we do on plants and their needs. We will grow a variety of different flowers under our grow light and then send them home for Mother's Day when they are ready to bloom. The materials that I need are Design-Your-Own calendars, and Collage Pots in the Lakeshore catalog. I think that these materials will serve 2 purposes. The kids will learn a great deal about our calendar and plants in preparing to give these neat gifts to their families/moms.
