Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

John F. Kennedy said, "Leadership and learning are indispensable to each other," and helping my young students to be leaders is a vital component of their education..

I teach the most amazing, curious and bright group of gifted second graders here in Illinois.

Most of them are second-language learners and come from low-income families. Despite the lack of funds, their parents are committed to their children's education and success. Our school is a public institution which has been greatly impacted by the lack of funds in our state.

My Project

Time for Kids is a weekly magazine for young students that covers topics in the news in a very kid-friendly way. No scare tactics here. :-) The magazine is bright and colorful and teaches children things they should know about, yet in a way that engages them in the stories. Besides keeping kids up-to-date with the news, it presents it in a fun way to learn about nonfiction writing. Most of the texts kids read in class are fiction, and so they have trouble learning the parts of nonfiction and how to effectively read it. With Time for kids, they become familiar with nonfiction parts: titles, headings, pictures, captions, graphs and charts and more. All this without making them feel like they're learning.

My students learn not only about the news and nonfiction, but Time for Kids inspires them to take action.

They want to know how they can help the environment, support animal rights' groups and much more. Time for Kids puts them on the road to becoming the active, involved adults we hope for all children.
