Gifted Students Explore! Aqueducts, Worm Dissections, and Egg Drop Devices
Help me give my students an opportunity to engineer Roman aqueducts (plastic tubing, dowel rods), create egg drop devices (tape glue guns, etc.), dissect worms, and work on numerous other creative projects throughout the year.
I am a teacher of gifted students grades 4-8 in a rural West Virginia community. I work with many of the best and brightest students in our area and enjoy bringing them opportunities to be creative, use critical thinking skills, and take positive academic risks.
A significant portion of the students at my school are economically disadvantaged, but that doesn't mean they should miss out on the unique opportunities that I can offer them in my class.
I try to make our learning experiences student driven and as hands-on as possible. The only downside to this is that our projects require ample amounts of supplies. My classroom budget often runs out before my ideas do.
This year I hope to run a mock trial, engineer Roman aqueducts, dissect worms, and build egg drop devices. Additionally, my students have mentioned that they would like to explore Shakespeare, agriculture, language studies, and robotics.
I don't want a lack of supplies to determine the limits of our studies. Help me open a world of opportunities to my students.
My Project
These materials will enable my gifted students to actively engage in hands-on learning activities across all subjects. Three projects that I plan to implement with these materials are designing Roman aqueducts, worm dissections, and engineering egg drop devices which will be dropped from the ladder of a fire truck. Students will need the plastic tubing, glue guns, glue, colored pencils and sharpeners, dowel rods, tape, markers, to engineer the aqueducts. Straws, glue guns, glue, tape, markers, colored pencils will be used for the egg drops. In addition, I will also gather cardboard, bubble wrap, 2-liter bottles, etc. for both of these projects. For the worm dissection, the dissection kits and worms will be used.
Not only will students have the opportunity to collaborate and use critical thinking skills, these projects will give them the freedom to take legitimate risks, try out new ideas, and be innovators in their own rights.
Help us explore! Be part of igniting learning interests that will benefit my students for a lifetime.
