I teach 2 academically gifted classes in 8th grade. My students are incredibly gifted in many different areas and have a love of reading like no other. We have been reading novels this year as a class and quite often the books my students want to read are not a part of our library’s collection. With the budget in our state not being passed for education and many of my students are economically disadvantaged, I have no way to purchase the books we need for the remainder of the semester. My students love to dig deep into book discussions and share with each other daily about chapters read the night before. To most, reading is their passion!
My Project
These books will continue to enhance the print-rich classroom that I strive to create. My students will be reading To Kill A Mockingbird as well as this one. The novel I am requesting will allow the other class to read a companion novel about the same topic. With the budget in our state not being passed yet, it is incredibly hard to secure books for my upper level students to read. Every student book that is placed in my library is treated with love and care, and they are thankful for the opportunities to read. This book has been chosen with my students in mind- as I have watched them the past few weeks of school read titles just like these, and I have also asked them what type of books they would enjoy reading. After studying the companion list for the novel set that we do have, this was the most popular title chosen.
