Next year, I will teach reading and writing to 9th grade students at The Urban Assembly School for Law and Justice in Brooklyn, NY. A typical day in one of my literacy classes consists of grammar work, shared reading, discussion, writing, and independent reading. Nearly all of the students I meet struggle with literacy in some way, and many of them struggle simply with choosing the right book to read. As any reader knows, trying to read a book one finds uninteresting or too difficult is frustrating. So for struggling readers, having the right book (and the right book isn't always on the bookshelf in the classroom) is essential. In the past, generous donors have sponsored proposals to take students to our local Barnes & Noble to choose and buy books. This field trip has been wildly successful and has become well known among my past students. In fact, many have asked me, on the first day of class, "Are you going to take us to buy books?" It is fantastic to see them excited about a trip to the bookstore (where many of them have never been) and to see what a difference it makes when they have books they have chosen and can keep. Students who previously spent more than half of their in-class reading time digging through books in the classroom (feeling discouraged about reading and finding nothing) have started to rush me through lessons so that they can start reading! I would like to be able to take 75 students to the bookstore when school starts this fall and let each student buy a book. Thank you for reading this proposal.
