Help me give my students the materials they need to help create their over 70 different ventures. The students are using materials for jewelry, sewing, cooking, artwork, and many other projects.
The students involved in 20projects are senior US Government and AP Government students who are interested in pursuing a passion project. They come from a small school that fosters an environment where everyone tends to know everyone. This project allows them to explore and share an individual idea or activity that represents them.
We spend a lot of time exploring the concepts and opinions of our government, but this year I'm allowing them time to explore their own ideas and to create something that is their own.
My Project
At Google, employees are given twenty percent of their time to pursue a project they are passionate about. From this time, products like Gmail, Google Drive and Google Sky have emerged. This type of forward thinking can be applied to education as well. An opportunity for students to immerse themselves into a passion project can lead to endless possibilities. This is a major project-based-learning assignment that spans an entire semester with a culminating presentation during the second semester, and encourages students to pursue a creative interest they would otherwise not experience in our academic program. They spend the majority of high school doing projects and assignments they're told to. This project allows them to learn and work on something they want to. Some students used this as an opportunity to promote a social cause while others have decided to explore a more personal interest. We have a student who wants to use the ingredients to make baked goods that will raise money for a local animal shelter. We have several groups who are creating their own jewelry and using the money to support a cause. Other students are using the paint to create artwork to sell. Two young ladies are creating a line of cat clothes to sell while another gentleman is sewing his own pair of dog like mascot feet. We have over 70 projects this year that range from small business opportunities to creating care packages for the homeless.
