This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are fantastic! Most students come from low-socioeconomic backgrounds. The community here is very small and a majority of the school is on free/reduced lunch. My students are eager to learn and love, love, LOVE reading class novels together. They are interested in fantasy and action books as well as books that they can relate to as well. I believe my students will really enjoy Ghost! My class is large this year with 32 students, many of which are English Learners and some who are in special education.

My Project

My students begin the year not enjoying reading and with each novel we read as a class they are more and more excited to read. Ghost! by Jason Reynolds has to do with a middle school boy with a father incarcerated and a mother just trying to make things work at home. My students will be able to relate to difficult family situations like the main character and be invested in the book. Students want to feel like they are not alone and they can have that feeling with this book. Students will be exposed to new places, people, and vocabulary within their own hands while reading this book. With this novel I will also be purchasing a novel unit in which students work on vocabulary, comprehension questions, and short/long answers.
