I teach all elementary subjects to a heterogeneous group of first-graders in a Title I K-8th school. The group includes ELL students. The students are hardworking and come from a variety of socioeconomic backgrounds. Some come from different towns and communities since a neighboring school closed a few years ago.
This project will impact my future first graders.
In the near future, several schools from nearby communities are consolidating which will increase the needs and variety of backgrounds present in my classroom.
My Project
Kidslearninghq. com states that "a typical classroom will have around 29 percent visual learners, 34 percent auditory learners and 37 percent kinesthetic learners with around 30 percent of students of mixed learning styles". As their educator, it is imperative for me to be able to teach to all of the learning styles present in my classroom.
Kids learn by DOING!
Teaching with Math manipulatives plays such an important role in students who need hands-on learning. All students benefit from manipulatives because it provides an opportunity for them to transfer the skills that they are learning. First grade teaches addition & subtraction strategies using number lines, number bonds, ten frames, as well as time, money sense, place value, etc. Having manipulatives present during instruction for students to get their hands on not only offers visual support to my lessons but allows application of what they are learning to real-world situations.
