The students involved are all members of Team 6167, Carvers Bay's FRC team. We are a relatively new team at a small school. The students all give there time after school at least once a week outside of build season. During build season, which runs from January through February, these students will be at school working on the robot 6 days a week, sometimes for 4 or more hours a day.
The students are from diverse backgrounds and socioeconomic levels.
They range from 9th through 12th grades. Many have interest in becoming involved in STEM fields after high school. Some of the higher grade students have become interested in STEM careers since they have become involved in robotics.
This laptop is essential for our robotics team. The laptop we have was donated as a part of our original rookie equipment kit. It is very small and is highly under-powered for the software we are using today. The students are having difficulty keeping our current laptop functioning. Also, programming on our current laptop has become problematic as the RAM is insufficient to run the compiler program as well as any other programs we need as information resources.
The students have been adapting to our current laptop as well as can be expected, but this past season the problems became too much for their ingenuity to overcome.
With this new laptop, I hope the students will not have to worry about connectivity, programming, or resource issues for several years to come.
