Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I'm a fifth grade teacher in the heart of East New York, Brooklyn. Over 98% of our students receive free lunch. Over the years I've been working very hard with fifth graders that are far below grade level in reading and math. Due to the lack of resources provided by our math program, students don't get the hands-on experience they need to develop basic skills in math. In order to bring students to the level they need to be at for graduation, I want to create a math center that will motivate students to succeed in areas that they are lacking. In this center, I want students to get individual practice matching up equivalent fractions, decimals, percentages, and graphic representations. I also want to explore with the whole class concepts that range from simple place value with decimals to expanded notations with decimals. With your help and generosity, I am confident that these materials will allow my fifth graders to walk down the aisle at graduation with a greater self-esteem and confidence in math.
