My students are seventh grade science students. They attend a school in a high-needs, inner-city district in New York state. We are Title I school, with most of our students receiving free or reduced lunch. Our district is low on resources and as a result, many supplies need to be purchased by individual teachers. My students are eager and interested in learning new things, yet our district's lack of resources hold them back from learning to their full potential and becoming as engaged in science education as they could be.
Many of my students have difficulty focusing on their school work while being required to sit in traditional seating options.
As a result, they tend to fidget and want to move around, rather than concentrating on school work.
My students would benefit from yoga ball chairs. Balancing on the yoga ball while working strengthens the body's core. This strengthening of the core has been shown to increase focus and work stamina in the classroom.
I strive to make my classroom a space where students can each learn to the best of their ability.
The yoga ball chairs will help those of my students who have difficulty focusing and staying on task. Over the past few years, I have increased the flexible seating options, adding yoga mats and stand up wobble boards. Students love to be able to choose how they will position themselves to best focus in my classroom.
