Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My class is an exciting and energized environment full of students eager to be challenged but lacking the means to do so. Students are constantly working to solve problems using multiple methods as well as having collaborative conversations with each other to enhance the learning of each other.

My students come mostly from a low socioeconomic background.

Some of my students are homeless and a few are experiencing school for the very first time. They are often unable to bring daily necessities to school such as backpacks and pencils. My students definitely bring a positive attitude to the classroom even though the circumstances they are dealing with outside of class are not ideal. My school is located in a low socioeconomic neighborhood. The school provides students with some of the basic necessities possible in order to get students through the day, such as a meal before school or basic school supplies. Though my school does its best to provide for students, resources are still scarce and at times, it is up to the teacher to provide what the school cannot. Violence is not uncommon in this neighborhood, so the staff does its best to support those students who have experienced traumatic events.

My Project

The materials will be an amazing help to my class. The books, such as Pete the Cat, Fly Guy, and the various Mo Willems stories are high interest books among my students and would definitely be read throughout the year. My students also will be able to partake in our Accelerated Reader quizzes which will allow the student to not only test themselves weekly on books they read but allow them to track their reading growth over the school year. Also, students will be able to practice and learn math concepts using the materials supplied in engaging ways. The students will be able to practice addition and subtraction using the math towers and learn the characteristics of 3-D shapes using the 3-D shapes set. Students will be able to work in small groups on activities geared toward the common core standards we are learning. It will allow me to not only have the students answer questions I give them, but do it in a fun and hands-on way.

My students want to learn and grow.

They come into the classroom each day with a smile and eagerness that can't be taught. These donations will not only allow me to address all my students at their various learning levels, but it will also allow them to learn using appropriately leveled and engaging materials. These materials will enhance their understanding of the standards and will increase the students interest in what is being taught.
