Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Actions speak louder than words. Students need learning to be purposeful. There’s no better way for students to connect to learning than through action. Students will be completing a unit on Identity and completing a service learning project to create change.
My students are energetic and fun inner-city high school students.
Many of my students have a range of disabilities including learning disabilities, visual impairments, autism and intellectual disabilities. Many of them are also English Language Learners. My students show greater enthusiasm when learning is interactive, interesting and includes hands-on activities such as service learning projects and community service.
My school is located in a large urban city. Of the 3,100 students, 94% are low-income, 10% of the students have disabilities, and 8% are English Language Learners. More than 75% of my particular students are low-income, have disabilities and are English Language Learners. I teach my students not to let their personal home situations, English Language Learners status or disabilities hinder their academic or social emotional growth.
My Project
Students will participate in an Identity unit. As a culminating event, students will work in groups to complete a service leaning project of their choice. Service learning projects allow students to interact with their communities in a positive manner. This allows students to show different types of strengths other than academics. Through literature and viewing the film, He Named Me Malala, students will gain a variety of perspectives as to the impact one person can make. They will realize that they can alone with a group create change.
Being able to view the film He Named Me Malala will help students see how one person can create change.
It will also help them realize some of the inequities that take place throughout the world. Viewing the film will be a stepping stone for students to plan their service learning projects. It will inspire them to create change and serve their school, local and world-wide communities.
