My students need quality literature that deals with current event topics many of them and their families can relate to such as refugees and immigration.
Ours is a very diverse city and our school demographics reflect that. 77% of our students are African American or Latino alongside a small percentage of white students, most come from working class families.
86% of our student body qualifies for free or reduced-price lunch, and 22% are English Language Learners and receive ELL services.
Our students love to learn and their families try as much as they can to participate in their child's education. Our school's network values families and engages them via a variety of programs that provide citizenship, fitness and English language services among others.
My Project
The teachers at my school feel passionately about a culturally relevant curriculum that is rigorous and empowers our students to challenge the status quo while learning about their own cultures and the cultures of others.
We want to provide our students with enjoyable stories about both real and make belief characters who embarked on journeys seeking a better life.
Many of our students' families have had this experience in the recent past. With the political climate being the way it is today, we feel the responsibility to arm our students with as much knowledge and pride as we can.
We will read stories about different immigrant experiences in literature while also exposing our students to non-fiction texts about Ellis Island and the immigrants of the past. The goal is for our students to begin to understand immigration as a social history pattern and relate and validate their own experiences.
