Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Our students come from all over New York City. Some of our students are in all AP classes, while some are in self-contained special needs classes. The library is one place where many of them come together. The library is the heart of the school, where students not only read and research but also celebrate and dream. Our students grow and move forward in the library.
Our students represent a rich cross-section of AP college-bound student, English language learners, and special needs students.
My Project
I've gotten funding to attend the School Library Journal Leadership and Diversity Basecamps. Now I just need support to travel there and get housing.
The basecamp will focus on skills that will directly impact the students in West Harlem.
"Participants will engage with a faculty of innovative education leaders to explore a range of topics including building an impactful library program, taking the lead on tech, diversifying collections, aligning with standards and school goals, information literacy, developing strategic partnerships, and much more."
My goal this summer is to work with highly skilled peers so that I can stay sharp and focus on my students with the latest tools and thinking to benefit my students. The second day, I would like to take a workshop focusing on how libraries focus on diversity. I think the workshop description states the benefits best: "This immersive, interactive day of learning will focus on the evaluation of books and media, collection development practices, readers’ advisory, and book marketing and promotion. Attendees will come away with an understanding of key concepts, such as white privilege, implicit bias, and intersectionality. Librarians will learn how to recognize offensive stereotypes, tropes, and microaggressions within media and how to assess for authenticity and appropriation." I'm looking forward to expanding my vision and continuing to impact my students!
