Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My classroom is filled with a diverse group of curious students who come from various backgrounds. Many of my students come from low-income families, and they don't have the resources others may have.
All of my students come to school eager and ready to learn.
This is why I do my best to give all of them the resources they need to have a successful future. Even though my students come from various backgrounds, there's one thing that makes them the same. They love learning, especially when they get to learn in creative ways.
My Project
As a fifth grade teacher, I have noticed that my students don't have a firm understanding of certain fraction concepts, such as comparing fractions with unlike denominators. Sure they know how to "cross multiply" to compare fractions, but they don't know why they do this.
Having the fractions cubes to take apart and compare will help my students see why one fraction is less than, greater than, or equal to another fraction.
Also, as we dive into our fraction unit, new complicated concepts will be taught, which can confuse my students. I will not teach them the "short cut" . Rather, I want to teach them the concept in depth. For example, multiplying fractions can be a hard idea for students. They don't quite understand when multiplying fractions, the fractional units get small not larger. Which is why giving them transparent fractional parts to visually see these concepts will absolutely help them.
When students truly grasp these concepts they can use them in their daily lives. Imagine not just memorizing "short cuts" in math, but truly understanding the concepts to later use them in real life.
