My students need tools and resources (headsets, monitors and theater books) to improve their technical theatre experience in lighting and backstage communication!
Within our drama club, every student can find a place to contribute. From technical jobs, such as set building and painting, to lighting and sound, our students take leadership roles within the production. They work together in teams to learn new skills and help create mentoring relationships.
Students who participate in the drama club come from grades 6-11 and from diverse backgrounds.
They join our production with a range of varying experiences, and the older drama club members help to mentor the younger ones. Through our practices they learn the skills necessary for running the production themselves. Students take up leadership roles within every area of the play’s production. They learn to manage the backstage organization. They learn how to run the lighting system. They take up the leadership of the production. Despite our tight budget, students learn valuable lessons!
My Project
One of the areas in which my students need additional resources is technical theatre. Although we teach the elements of design in our theatre classes, we need additional supplies in order to truly practice technical work, instead of just studying it. Our students have won awards at festival for lighting and costuming, but we need resources to continue to further educate our student theatre designers and technicians.
Students take up leadership roles in every element of technical theatre, from setting up and designing lights and sound to creating costumes and set pieces.
These tools will give students the resources they need for another season of growth in the area of technical theatre!
Because our current backstage communication system needs improvements and updates, a new set of wireless intercoms will be a big help! It is challenging to have clear and precise communication when the walkie talkies do not work consistently! We have recently acquired a new lighting board, and this monitor will be a part of our programmed lighting system. These text books will be great resources for us as we continue to research technical theatre and learn new information.
Because our program is self-funded, we need the help of our incredible community to help our Drama Club and Theatre Program. These items will go a long way in giving our students the tools they need to advance in their technical skills and to aid them in the storytelling of theatre.
