My students come from a variety of backgrounds and socioeconomic levels. As 5th grade students at our school, they are in a huge time of transition in their lives. They have just moved from the elementary school and now they are adjusting to middle school life. They are adjusting to switching classrooms, having after school activities available, and a larger workload. These students not only adjust to the changes that meet them at the middle school, but they surpass all expectations.
My Project
Over half of the students at my school come from a low-income home. Because of this, often times students do not come to school with the requested school supplies. As you can imagine, this can be embarrassing and greatly affect their ability to learn. This project will help enable those students to have some of the basic supplies that people often overlook. For example, I have requested pencils, crayons, and markers. A pencil is a must-have instrument for each and every child. Having crayons and markers available to the students in my class will enable them to express their knowledge and abilities in a more creative way.
The classroom is the students' home for the day, and it falls on the teacher to make it comfortable.
Because of this, I also requested a variety of classroom organizational materials. I requested drawer sets for each table group to keep group materials together. This will also allow me to save valuable learning time by placing either materials or papers in the drawers. Another thing requested was a classroom set of mailboxes. Each student needs a secure place to pick up their graded work or important papers.
Allowing students access to the materials in the project will enable students to stay focused on their education. These items are necessary for the day-to-day operation of our classroom.
