My students are from a small fairly rural part of Virginia with a long history in the formation of the United States. I want to encourage them to be the explorer's in a digital environment. Students I work with have limited exposure to the digital world and no exposure to robotics or programming. There is limited internet access in the County and limited devices. They are missing out on some of the things their city peers have had for many years.
We are excited for the 2017-18 school year because our Administration is encouraging exploring more STEM opportunities by creating a Makerspace in the middle school and encouraging more project based learning at the elementary level.
Of course, our students are excited for this too! The students do not have access to devices every day but when they do they create amazing work. I know the students will welcome these new challenges.
My Project
Our school started the very first County FIRST Lego League robotics team this year with the help of 2 dedicated teachers (Mrs. Kappus and Mrs. Holloway) and lots of parent support. The team consisted of 10 4th and 5th graders. The students had never experienced this before and in the first (and only) competition the team was awarded 2nd place in Robotic performance.
We want to continue this great program by helping start a Middle school team for those 5th graders moving up and sustain the team at our school for another successful year!
Students learned how to work together to solve problems, what robotics means and how to program. The success of the first team encouraged students all over the school to explore robotics. We need funds to cover the Season challenge field kit for both teams and registration costs.
DonorsChoose is the most trusted classroom funding site for teachers.
As a teacher-founded nonprofit, we're trusted by thousands of teachers and supporters across the country. This classroom request for funding was created by Mrs. Kappus and reviewed by the DonorsChoose team.
