My student body consists of approximately 150 students from low socioeconomic backgrounds. The racial makeup of my students is 95% African-American. A majority of my students come from homes where parents do not have a college education.
It is the objective of the school to ensure that the students are on the path to being college and career ready by the time they leave middle school.
However, this is quite difficult because many of the students are reading two to three grade levels below the national average. In order to create greater opportunities for success, we strive to create challenging and engaging lessons, which students find exciting.
Our students work very hard in a structured environment. Our students need more than just mental stimulation, they also need physical activity. You should see the students squirming in their seats from boredom. My students need and deserve some playtime. We are hoping to give students some much-needed release time on a periodic basis-hopefully at the end of each week, or at least at the end of each month.
On a periodic basis, the middle school department will take the students out and allow them to have free play.
Each teacher will have a group of students and monitor softball, kickball, volleyball, a 3 legged race or some other type of physical activity for the students to enjoy. This will be a much-needed release for students and teachers. Let's just have fun.
