Getting Reluctant Readers to Read Using eReaders

My students need 2 Nook eReaders and a variety of ebooks as well as 6 Bananagram games in order to improve their reading and vocabulary.

My Students

I work hard to get my students to read. I try to find the most interesting books and the latest technology in order to get them reading.

I work in a high-need, very diverse Middle School in rural North Carolina.

Last year over 70% of our students qualified for free or reduced lunch. I expect that with the economy continuing the way it is that number will increase this year. In addition, we are approximately 40% Hispanic, 30% African American and 30% Caucasian. I love working in an environment where three different ethnic groups integrate and mingle like they do at my school. I can see so much potential in my students but with the economic background that many of them have it is going to be difficult to inspire them and provide them with the skills that they need to succeed.

My Project

In order to inspire my students to read, I am requesting two Barnes and Noble Nook eReaders and several titles that students are interested in reading. I am hoping that by presenting the book in a new and exciting technology format, that I will be able to entice my reluctant readers to read. My students are very interested in all varieties of technology and I feel that using an eReader will help hook some of my students to reading. In addition I am requesting six Bananagrams games. Bananagrams is a Scrabble-like game in that you use tiles to create words. It goes beyond Scrabble in that all players are trying to create their own word clusters at the same time. This would be a great addition to my classroom in order to get my students thinking and using vocabulary. Vocabulary is the most important aspect of learning that many of my students are missing.

Unfortunately some students are not "grabbed" by books nowadays.

They need that something extra to get them "hooked on reading." I work hard to make sure that every student in my class leaves with a love (or at least a like) of reading. Please help me connect to some of my reluctant readers by helping to provide them with eReaders.
