My school is located in a high-need community in New York City. All of the students are diagnosed as autistic. The children in the class are significant low functioning. Most of them are limited in their speech and language skills. In addition, their frustration tolerance is low and they require a structured learning environment.
When the students get anxious and frustrated, they often exhibit aggressive behaviors such as biting, banging on the table, scratching, hitting, pushing, etc., to get out their feelings.
Therefore, the students require the color coding system, visual pictures and some sensory toys in their learning environment to help them to organize a sequence of events, manage their behavior and communicate with other people as well as enhancing their activity transitions.
My Project
For the past years, we were so fortune that Donorchoose had funded our classroom materials such as the sensory toys, cartridges and printer. The light-up fan and play dough were used in the classroom to improve the students’ self-regulations and frustrations. With the color printer, we were successful to create a color-coded based learning environment in the classroom. For example, a color-coded picture exchange communication system to improve their communication skills, a color-coded spot to help them to sit down and line up during the activity transition. Moreover, a color-coded letter in order to help the students to read the words.
In 2018-2019 school year, our students in Class Y32 have extremely benefited from these funded materials and they have shown tremendous progresses in their academic skills.
However, the sensory toys and the printer became broken over the year(s). The materials are not usable for the new students in 2019-2020 school year.
In conclusion, a printer/copier, ink cartridges and some sensory toys would provide a tremendous help to our students to start their new adventures in a new school year.
