Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students truly are my motivation. Despite the various obstacles that they and their families face (not having stable housing, being new to the country, and so on), my students come to school every day ready to learn and they exceed my expectations constantly.
Unfortunately, since the school year began virtually, many of my students are behind where they should be, especially my many English language learners (15/18 students) and students from lower income families (85% FARL).
As a first-year teacher, I came into this year full of energy and excitement to teach my wonderful kindergartners. However, as a first-year teacher, I lack some supplies that would normally take a while to self-fund. This problem is only exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic, and the amount of supplies that we has run thin. I want to be able to provide that same high-quality education that any more senior teacher would be able to provide and that we would be able to have during any normal school year.
My Project
A child's education doesn't stop when they exit the doors of the school every day. I do all that I can inside the classroom, but parents also have a strong hand in the education of their children.
Though my students have very dedicated parents, these parents don't always have the means to further their children's education beyond the school building; I would like to change that.
My wish list can be looked at in two parts. First, I would like to get some supplies that will help me when I am working individually with students on reading skills in the classroom. I need pocket charts, a tabletop whiteboard, and "whisper phones" so that students can hear themselves reading. I would also like to purchase several decodable readers (those where students can sound out most words) to create a set from which students could take a book home each night.
If I teach students the skills in the classroom, and parents encourage reading at home, we can work together to enhance each learner's abilities. As an added bonus, parents will get to see the progress that their child is making in reading!
