This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
My classroom is a diverse inclusive classroom of low-income students aged 3 to 5. For most of my students, this is their first learning experience. All of our students receive free breakfast and lunch at school. We are located in the inner city of Pittsburgh and provide a free comprehensive program that is designed to nurture and support each child as we prepare them to transition to kindergarten.
My students are very interested in learning about letters, math social studies, engineering, and science, and enjoy exploring with technology.
They are dreamers, thinkers, and questioners and love to discover new things about the world around them. Despite the challenges they face they come to school each day ready to work and play with smiles and positive attitudes.
My Project
My students are a group of 3, 4 and 5 years old children. They are very hardworking and they come to school every day eager to learn. However, children at this age are extremely active and they all learn in different ways and some students have a very hard time focusing in a traditional chair. When students are comfortable and have the freedom to choose, they are more likely to participate and have a more positive outlook on learning.
In order to provide a flexible learning environment, I am hoping to provide flexible seating options for my students.
Flexible and comfortable seating options will provide opportunities for each student to learn in a way that is comfortable for them and meets their learning needs. Comfy floor chairs, balance balls and wobble cushions will allow my students to make choices about where and how they sit. This will give them an independent feeling and increase focus. The children are happier, more comfortable, and more eager to learn when they are given the option of where to sit and which type of seating.
