Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
We provide over 1,000 students with an education every year. Most of the student population is of Hispanic background, but there are also students with Asian, African American, Middle Eastern and Caucasian backgrounds. Our school is in a high poverty area of Chicago.
However, the lack of resources and the large population does not hide the curiosity of my 6th graders to continue their learning process.
Every day they come into the classroom highly motivated and intrigued to learn. They come from amazing and loving families that support them to receive the best education that as children they may have not received. I am sure that with their motivation, additional supports and resources, these outstanding 6th graders will reach their highest potential.
My Project
This year my 6th grade team and I decided to focus highly on grammar, composition, spelling and other important aspects of writing. In order for our students to become better writers, we decided to start writing journals. The composition notebooks will be for each student and they will not be any ordinary writing notebook.
They will be interactive writing notebooks.
We collaborated on this idea because it is a great way to get students excited about writing. There are also a lot of writing skills that have been lost throughout the years. This interactive notebook will allow every student the opportunity to express their unique ideas on paper, in hopes of them becoming avid writers.
